What is Mayabtun Limestone

As any other limestone, this is a sedimentary rock, consisting essentially of calcium carbonate. It is of organic origin and represents the calcareous remain of the animals and plant organisms, usually inhabiting salt water periods, limestone were deposited in many different geological and are widely distributed throughout the world.

Coquina, Mayabtun "Sisal", or shell limestone is very common on the flat portion of the Yucatan Mexico Peninsula, where Mayabtun quarries it. Consist of partly broken shells loosely cemented together.

Mayabtun Limestone, as many others, may contain impurities like iron oxide, sand magnesium, etc. Mayabtun Uxmal limestone contain iron oxide giving it its peculiar and beautiful orange red color.

Mayabtun Limestone is an oolitic limestone, this is composed of tiny spherical oolites. This give it its porous texture.

Limestone are used more than marble in the world (Enciclopedia Americana Vol. 17-522)

QUALITY

By quality Mayabtun means uniformity in sizes and thickness, within our stablished industry standards and production control. There should be no disk marks, although in rustic finish there be minimal and very fine marks produced by the calibrating machine, which shouldn´t appear in the honed finish products.

IRREGULARITIES

Our stone, by nature, have small irregularities and cavities. Uxmal is routinely filled with cement, sand and pigment; there being many colors in each stone it is very difficult to match the color perfectly. We only fill in Uxmal at no cost. Ostra is not filled nor advised to. The others are not filled in because cavities are so small that this can be done at the time of grouting. However if by any particular reason this is required a small charge will be made.

The only limit for applications is the applicant's imagination. In cold climates where the freeze-thaw cycle is in effect, Mayabtun recommends that limestone is used with caution, due to the water absorption co-efficient (4.6%). The thicker the stone the more resistant it is to the cold. Proper sealing also decreases the risk of damage.

INSTALLATION

Mayabtun tiles are set in the same manner as marble and granite tiles. Regular thinset or mortar may be used to install the tiles. A white thinset or cement must be used in the installation of light colors to prevent staining and darkening. A gray thinset or cement may be used for installation with medium colors. In general, a sealer is applied after setting the tiles, either before or after grouting, for grouting you can used a matching color or non staining natural gray grout.

MAINTENANCE

Upkeep is reduced to a minimum with a sweep of a dust mop or a wipe with a damp mop for mexican limestone to maintain its natural beauty. For a more through cleaning several companies offer natural stone cleaners. Sealing is highly recommended, however, strong acids can damage the shine on the stone, if this occurs, sanding with a fine paper and re-sealing will bring the shine again. If heavy damage occurs limestone can be re-polished as many times as you desire in order to regain its original appearance.

The limestone is packed in Mayabtun directly from the finishing tables. A small amount of water is often present when packed. The moisture in the stone does not affect the installation, even with the use of thin set. Due to the moisture content, the stone is often darker in appearance before installation.

Available Finishes:
Honed
It is a polished finish which is delivered with a soft even texture. This product can easily brought to a fully gloss by re-polishing after installation.

Rustic
It has a natural porous texture which makes it an ideal product for outside applications due to its anti-skid resistance and slippage under the wettest of conditions.

Saw Finish
It is similar to rustic, however the coloring of the stone is slightly clearer and occasionally saw machine streaks appear on the surface of the stone.
